If you are embarking on your new adventure to live and work in AUSTRALIA then one of the most important things to consider, is whether you will need to provide an English test or not – Those who do not have to provide an English test score are a citizen of and hold a valid passport issued by the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland.

So if you do not hold one of the passports mentioned above, you will need to provide an English test as part of your Application process.

What tests are accepted?

IELTS which stands for International English Language Testing system.

PTE which stands for Pearson Test of English

TOEFL which stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language

OET which stands for occupational English test

Cambridge English test which means exactly what its called :)

The most popular English tests that candidates take are the PTE and the IELTS

So different visas have different score levels required, which we will cover below for the most popular tests:

482 Visa – English scores needed:

  • If using IELTS you need at least 5.0 with a score of at least 4.5 in each of the test components for an nominated occupation on the ‘short list’ such as Cook.
  • OR Overall band score of at least 5.0 with a score of at least 5 in each of the test components for a nominated occupation on the ‘skilled list” such as Chef.
  • If using PTE you will need a score of Overall band score of at least 36 with a score of at least 30 in each of the test components for an nominated occupation on the ‘short list’ such as Cook.
  • OR Academic overall test score of at least 36 with a score of at least 36 in each of the test components for a nominated occupation on the ‘skilled list” such as Chef.

494 Visa – English scores needed:

  • If using IELTS you will need to score a ‘Competent English’ level to meet the requirements which is At least 6 in each of the 4 components.
  • If using PTE you will need to score competent which is At least 50 in each of the 4 components.

491 Visa – English scores needed:

  • The minimum English score that immigration will accept under the ‘points based’ visa program for the main applicant for the EOI (Expression of interest) is competent which for IELTS tests is at least 6 in each of the 4 components.
  • If using PTE, a competent score would be At least 50 for each of the 4 components
  • In order to gain points towards your EOI, using an English test, you would need IELTS of 7 in each of the 4 components and this would give you ten points.
  • To gain points towards your EOI score If using PTE, you would need 65 in each of the 4 components
